It would take several lifetimes to discover everything the DC-Baltimore area has to offer for creative types. It’s often overwhelming how much is right at your fingertips. Case in point: The Baltimore Jewelry Center — a place I’ve apparently driven by a million times!
Of course Baltimore has a jewelry center that I had no clue about. Of course they offer beginners classes. Of course I’m going to take one!
A friend of mine began learning jewelry metal design and fabrication over a decade ago, but lost touch with the art form after becoming a mother. With her son now old enough to entertain and (sort of) feed himself, she’s back on the scene! After her 8-week metal work course, the studio held a birthday party / Spring Class Potluck / and the closing reception for Radical Jewelry Makeover Artist Project! (Whew! That was a lot.)
The pieces above were made by my friend. They’re two rings that are meant to be worn together, making a sun. In the back, you’ll see another ring with the word “Arcade”. She created that one too, dedicated to her son, Arcade. Below are a few more pieces that caught my attention. I spent the evening gawking at the jewelry and talking to each artist to hear their individual perspectives as designers. Being surrounded by so many detailed, unique pieces, and watching the pride on each designer’s face as they showcased their work, was inspiring.
And now, we begin saving up for a class 🙂
