Two conflicting thoughts. One, I’m bored with the fabric I have. Second, I refuse to buy new fabric until I use the fabric I have. So what’s a reasonable compromise here? Well, I thought about the types of patterns I’d like and then wondered if I could make those patterns myself somehow with paint. After a quick romp on Pinterest I found a potential solution: watercolors. Watercolors on fabric. Perfect!
I don’t want to buy new fabric because I don’t want to spend money (I’m trying, I’m trying!!). Spending a ton of money on watercolors would defeat the purpose. So I went down to my local Artist & Craftsman Supply for some help choosing a set. We decided on a Reeves 12-pack to start me off.
Following a tutorial I found on Ella Claire Inspired, I was able to make a few pretty sweet patterns. I’m not going to repeat the instructions because you can find them here, but I do want to provide a couple important tips. First, be sure to put plastic or plastic wrap underneath your fabric before you start painting. You don’t want to accidentally stain furniture. Second, the paint will run and spread on the fabric, so keep that in mind when you’re painting a design. Otherwise, have fun with it! Here are a few patterns I tried out. I plan to embroider on top of all of them. As you’ll see, I already started 😛
